How I Began To Paint ©️2019

In January of 2017, I began a journey into a life without alcohol.  That's right, I'm an alcoholic.

I'm also a U.S. Army veteran, which is how I ended up in the V.A. Domiciliary in Leavenworth, Kansas.

While I was there primarily for treatment of my alcoholism, they did have various recreational pass times. The one that I chose was Arts and Crafts.  They had the basic crafts, leather work, ceramics, model making, drawing and of course, painting.

I tried my hand at all of them.  I wanted to paint, but they had limited painting supplies.  So, I decided to purchase my own supplies. I got everything I needed to paint, $300.00 worth.  What can I say, I'm an alcoholic and alcoholics do everything to the extreme, at least yours truly did!

Sadly, I wasn't very good. My first paintings were cartoonish.  But the staff and the other vets encouraged me to keep going.

Five months later I graduated from the V.A. treatment program and I moved in to a modest one bedroom apartment in downtown Leavenworth.  Up till now I had only painted with watercolors.

Watercolors and acrylics are hard to work with, as they dry almost immediately.  If you make a mistake it is almost impossible to correct.

I decided to try my hand at painting with oils.  Once again, I went to the extreme and ordered $500.00 worth of oil paint supplies.  Oil paints is a very forgiving medium.  If you make a mistake, just take your pallet knife and scrape it off and start over.  And, that's what I did, paint and scrape, over and over again.

One day I was watching public television and The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross came on.  I thought, maybe I could learn how to paint from the Master himself, and so it began.  I bought the Bob Ross art supplies, from brushes to paints.

I practiced and practiced and slowly I began to show improvement.  I'm not a great painter today, but then I'm not the worst either.

As of today I have been painting for almost three years.
